Two carriers, the same trade lane, the same stretch of 2026. One landed 78.2% of its vessels on time. The other managed 38.0%. That is a 40.2-point gap on an identical route, and the forwarder who booked the cheaper of the two just quoted a client a transit time with a two-in-five chance of holding.

Sea-Intelligence put those numbers in print. In its May 2026 Global Liner Performance report, Maersk was the most reliable of the top-13 carriers at 78.2%, with Hapag-Lloyd at 76.0% and MSC at 71.6% close behind. Wan Hai sat at the bottom at 38.0%. Same ocean, same ports, same weeks. The difference was the carrier, and the difference was enormous.

Here is the part that should worry anyone quoting transit times right now. May was the good month. Global schedule reliability reached 64.7% in May, the highest figure of the year. Then June arrived. On-time performance fell to 56.6%, down 3.7 points in a single month and 2.3 points below June 2025, the first significant decline of 2026 after three straight months of improvement. Vessels that arrived late were an average of 3.8 days behind. On the Asia to North Europe trade, only 52.9% of vessels made their window at all.

So the field is both wide and moving. A forwarder is not choosing between reliable and slightly less reliable. On some lanes, half the sailings miss, and the carrier you happened to book decides whether your client sits in the reliable third or the 38% cellar.

What does a missed transit time actually cost the forwarder?

Not the carrier. The carrier already collected the freight. The cost lands on you.

A forwarder quotes a 30-day door-to-door based on a carrier’s proforma schedule. The client builds a distribution-center receiving slot, a retail on-shelf date, and an inland trucking appointment on top of that 30-day number. Now the vessel books a carrier running at 38.0% reliability and arrives, on average, 3.8 days late. The DC slot is gone. The truck was booked and now reschedules at a premium. Detention and demurrage clocks start on boxes that cannot move, and those charges accrue per container per day until the backlog clears. Somewhere downstream a promotion misses its date and a buyer starts asking who to call next time.

Optimizing on rate alone is not neutral on reliability. It actively selects for the bottom of the table, and it does so at the exact moment the whole field is deteriorating.

A five-point reliability check before you book

  1. Pull the carrier’s on-time performance for the specific lane, not its global average. A carrier can sit mid-table overall and still be the worst option on your route.
